As I entered the exam room to meet my new patient, I initially thought of the orange-haired heroine in the animated kid movie, Brave. Although the middle-aged woman’s hair was not quite as orange as the heroine’s, it was long, expansive in breadth and wavy in texture. Her hair seemed to engulf her petite frame. When was the last time you had a good laugh with your doctor?

I hear a lot these days about restructuring medical school curriculum to help train medical students not only to be clinically competent and to have an excellent bedside manner but to also be culturally aware and emotionally appropriate. I agree that such training is crucial however I would add authenticity to the equation.
