A physician’s warning on the keto diet

Shivam Joshi, MD

July 11, 2018

The keto diet has recently garnered much fame for its apparent ability to improve diabetes and obesity – results so impressive the Journal of the American Medical Association recently highlighted the diet and thereby christened it as something more than a low-carb craze. However, not all the evidence supports such a positive outlook, leading the diet to straddle the increasingly blurred lines between faddist snake …

The fire and fury of Trump’s diet

February 13, 2018

As a physician, I am totally disgusted by what President Donald Trump eats — and you should be too. His standing order on Trump Force One is reminiscent of a fast-food bacchanalia, comprised of “two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish, and a chocolate malted” according to the recently released book by his former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and top aide David Bossie.

But it doesn’t stop there: Trump …

President Trump: Stop focusing on insurance and focus on health

November 6, 2017

It may be hard to believe, but there is a bigger problem than repealing or saving the Affordable Care Act. And that problem is: Why are we so sick to need it in the first place?

Health insurance has become the sine qua non for life in America. Without it, the Fates sever the thread of life with ease. For those escaping the scissors of death, you might be beleaguered with …

Think we evolved to eat meat? Think again.

April 4, 2017

Eating meat has been linked to cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia and many other diseases. Nearly every modern lifestyle disease has been associated with meat. With so much emerging evidence against meat, it begs the question: Did we …

4 reasons to go vegetarian in 2016

January 20, 2016

If you have been thinking about becoming a vegetarian, there’s no better time to make the switch than the beginning of a New Year. For those of you have been on the fence, 2015 provided us with a few more reasons — like saving money and losing weight — to make the dietary transformation.

Reason #1: Vegetarian diets increase metabolism. Vegetarians have a lower body mass index compared to those eating meat, …

Repeal the federal ban on gun research and physician gag laws

Shivam Joshi, MD

January 12, 2016

There has been on average one mass shooting (involving at least 4 people) for every day this year. In the wake of the San Bernardino shooting — the most recent widely-covered mass shooting, America has reopened the debate over gun control, pitting a bereaved public beckoning for gun reform against strict Constitutionalists. Yet, in this polarizing debate filled with a seemingly binomial future, there are other options: Namely those that …

How the meat industry is acting like big tobacco

Shivam Joshi, MD

December 26, 2015

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) released its report condemning processed meat as a group 1 human carcinogen — a classification that includes such notorious companions as tobacco smoking, smokeless tobacco, and second-hand smoke. This is not surprising considering that processed meat contains many of the same known or probable carcinogens as cigarette smoke, like heterocyclic amines and N-nitrosamines.

Red meat was labeled in the runner-up category as a …

To better treat obesity, doctors need to change their own diets

November 29, 2015

Several weeks ago, I was running late to my afternoon clinic. Literally, I could not move my feet fast enough. Reminiscent of 1990s childhood computer games, my Oregon Trail tempo was somewhere between strenuous and grueling. Lunch in hand, I slid into clinic just as the nurse was readying the chart of my first patient. I stuffed my lunch into the desk drawer, read the name off the chart, and …

White coat in public place edited

People can wear what they want in America. Whether you want to debut the latest vogue or your midriff rife with adiposity, you are free to do so. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. In the span of one week, I found two people — on two separate occasions — wearing white coats, each …
