For years, health care commentators have predicted that technology would reduce the need for hospitalists. The logic seemed straightforward: If artificial intelligence can analyze labs, interpret imaging, suggest diagnoses, and generate treatment plans, why would hospitals need thousands of physicians whose primary role is coordinating inpatient care?
