Not having amputated a shoulder before, the surgeon in the Republic of Congo was advised by his UK-based colleague via text message while carrying out the dangerous procedure.
The situation was dire indeed: “We only had one pint of blood, one scalpel, one pair of forceps and I wasn’t sure if the anesthetic was strong enough.”
