As I stood there, my mentor, Dr. S, spoke in his gentle, wise voice, “Congratulations! You have been selected as the hospital’s new nocturnist.” The news hit me like a wave of disbelief, and a surge of emotions rushed through me. The competition for this position had been intense, leaving me uncertain about my chances. But now, at this moment, all those doubts were swept away. A whirlwind of feelings engulfed me – surprise, happiness, nervousness, hope, honor, and humility. It was the culmination of years of hard work, countless exams, and tests, all leading me to this new chapter in my medical career.

The journey hadn’t been without its challenges. Along the way, I encountered numerous obstacles and faced setbacks that tested my resilience. But little did I know, each setback held a disguised blessing, teaching me valuable lessons and shaping me into the doctor I am today. I could feel goosebumps forming on my skin as I reflected on my journey. That feeling, the tingling sensation of accomplishment and gratitude, had never truly left me since the day I entered residency and saw my picture with my name and the coveted “MD” written beneath it.

In moments like these, I couldn’t help but ponder the magnitude of the opportunity before me. “Who am I that God has chosen to make me a doctor?” I asked myself in awe. I was the youngest son of my loving parents, a boy who didn’t always excel in his early education. As an immigrant, I was once told that residency in my city was out of reach for an International Medical Graduate. I had faced my share of struggles with subjects like chemistry and biochemistry. Yet, here I stood, blessed with the means and willingness of my parents to support my education. It was a remarkable honor bestowed upon me, and it filled me with a profound sense of purpose.

To my fellow residency graduates, I extend a heartfelt message of encouragement. Let us not doubt our readiness as we embark on the next phase of our medical careers. As we step into new chapters of our lives, let us embrace the noble service we provide to our patients. We must remain humble, ever eager to learn and grow. Our primary responsibility is to safeguard the well-being of those entrusted to our care. And yes, as we embrace our roles, let us also find joy in the knowledge that our hard work and dedication will bring us the rewards we deserve.

With unwavering confidence, let us forge ahead, knowing that our experiences, knowledge, and compassion will guide us through the challenges we encounter. This is more than just a title; it is a calling, a responsibility we willingly shoulder. The path we have chosen may be demanding, but we are well-prepared to navigate its twists and turns. Let us seize every opportunity that comes our way, using our skills to make a tangible difference in the lives of our patients. In the darkest hours, we shall be the bearers of light, bringing comfort and healing to those who need it most.

As I expressed my gratitude to Dr. S, my mentor, I looked ahead with hope and determination. The future shimmered with possibilities, and my mind’s eye visualized the positive impact I could make as a nocturnist. I knew that with every breath I took, I was inhaling not just the air but also the inspiration to continue serving and striving for excellence.

The journey of a doctor is an incredible one, filled with challenges, triumphs, and the unwavering desire to make a difference. With our eyes fixed on the future, let us embark on this new chapter, ready to embrace the responsibilities and rewards that await us.
